Lucee Hosting

We have been working with with Lucee since its inception (and formerly Railo), providing both dedicated and shared Lucee hosting, as well as development and website maintenance. We use the best tools in the industry such as HackMyCF and FusionReactor to keep your Lucee hosting servers secure and running smoothly and to monitor customers applications. What is Lucee

It is a common misconception that ColdFusion is the language your website is written in, which is incorrect. Your application/website is actually written in CFML, and there are currently 2 application servers which will run CFML. ColdFusion is the commercial (and expensive) option from Adobe and Lucee (formerly Railo) is the open source (free) option.

Both solutions have their advantages and different features etc. However in the migrations and tests we have performed we have found that most legacy applications originally written for ColdFusion will run on Lucee hosting with little or no modifications at all and will also run faster due to Lucee’s improved performance.

The primary hurdle when moving to Lucee hosting is where you are using features that are proprietary to Adobe ColdFusion and do not exist in Lucee. We have found such instances quite rare, and in most cases an open source alternative is also available for those features as well or they can be replaced.

ColdFusion hosting or Lucee hosting?

While we offer both ColdFusion hosting and Lucee hosting, unless you specifically need ColdFusion proprietary features, we do generally recommend to try Lucee hosting first. Lucee is of course free, saving you on any licensing costs, it is also especially beneficial on shared hosting, as it is faster, more reliable, and more secure out of the box. One of our favorite features of Lucee is that each website has its own Lucee admin built right in, allowing you (or your developer) to manage and change all your settings and data sources on a per site basis without having to contact the host. Unlike ColdFusion, where there is only 1 CFAdmin, and the settings are applied to all websites across the entire server.

Reliability

We use FusionReactor to detect problems and assist in the smooth running of ColdFusion hosting servers, troubleshooting and diagnosing CFML issues. We run this as standard on our own servers, and provide as an optional add-on on all managed solutions. This is in addition to the performance and service monitoring we provide as standard.

Infrastructure

We use only providers with specifically tailored hosting infrastructure, optimized for running and managing your CFML applications. Cloud, VPS or shared. For the maximum in resilience and scalability, we can also provide bespoke high availability cloud configurations using Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure.

Security

We only use ColdFusion Enterprise Edition by default. Many cheap hosts run only standard edition which is not suitable for a shared hosting environment and is not secure due to lack of sand Securityboxing. All our shared/VPS servers are firewalled and run Anti-virus as standard.

How critical is your website to your business?

This is the important question you should ask yourself before deciding how much to spend on hosting. Shared hosting is the cheap option, and is great for websites which are not mission critical and do not need high levels of security, redundancy or to be up 24/7.

If you run a website that is critical to your business, a commerce site for example that generates all or most of your income or an application which needs to be online 24/7, or you need to store sensitive data, then sharing a server with hundreds of other customers is not the best solution.

For high availability and mission critical websites/apps a dedicated hosting solution is the only way to go.
